About Carlos

After graduating from CalArts with a BFA in Experimental Animation (89-93), I worked 15 years in animation before going to Florence, Italy to pursue my passion for painting. I completed the Florence Academy of Art Painting Program and studied portraiture at Charles Cecil Studios.

I now teach two courses at Kline Academy of Fine Arts in Los Angeles, CA:

Mondays- Introduction to Master Painting Techniques 6:30-9:30pm

Tuesdays- Classical Drawing 6:30-9:30pm.

ABOUT MY TEACHING

I am here to teach you how to drive a Toyota before you get into a Ferrari.

I welcome all skill levels.

I teach based on observations from life. Which includes portraiture, still life, and the figure. Whether the outcome is realism, abstract or experimental,  my goal is to develop strong foundational skills that allow the student to move forward with confidence:

-Basic drawing skills that lead to painting, including gesture and proportions, shape design,  understanding values and creating a strong value structure .

-A simple concept of oil painting that covers materials, basic color theory, mixing color, , managing your palette, basic composition, shape design and structure.

Most important is Attitude.

With a positive attitude, you can clear the path of obstacles and see the results emerge in your work.
